Meet our founders: From veterinarian to entrepreneur, a conversation with Babette Taugbøl
Meet Babette Taugbøl, a pioneering veterinarian and entrepreneur who has made significant strides in veterinary dermatology. From establishing her own clinic in Norway to developing innovative dermatology products, Babette's journey is a testament to her dedication to animal health. In this conversation, Babette shares how her passion for dermatology led to the creation of specialised veterinary services and products, and how partnering with Vimian and Nextmune has allowed her to expand her vision on a global scale.
Can you share your background?
I am a veterinarian, originally from Germany and I completed my education in Hannover, where I also met my Norwegian veterinarian husband. We moved to Norway in 1988 and I started my own clinic, working with both large and small animals. My interest in dermatology grew over time, leading me to pursue further education in the field. After several years of courses, I took an exam in veterinary dermatology in the UK in 1996 as the first Scandinavian veterinarian. I also earned a Swedish specialist title for dermatology in dogs and cats.
I understand that you quite early on started working with supplements. What was the inspiration behind this?
My husband did his PhD on omega-3 fatty acids which are crucial in nutrition and many pets lack them in their diets. Together, we therefore decided to produce a pure omega-3 fish oil supplement. We called the product Dr. Baddaky fish oil and launched it first in Norway and later in Sweden.
Following that product launch, how did you expand your business and expertise in veterinary dermatology?
We began by offering dermatology services and products through our clinic. I collaborated with a US-based company to introduce a reliable blood test for pet allergies in Scandinavia, which was initially controversial but proved effective. This led to further partnerships and the introduction of various dermatology products and treatments.
We expanded our business by setting up companies in Sweden and Denmark and collaborations in Finland, distributing our products and services across Scandinavia.
How did your collaboration with Nextmune come about, and why did you choose to partner up?
Around six years ago, Nextmune contacted us. I did not know them before but after meeting with CEO, Magnus Kjellberg, where we discussed our visions, I was impressed by his dedication and understanding of the field. This feeling has become stronger over time as we work together. He is not a veterinarian but stays updated and reads several veterinary journals.
After discussing our visions and values, I realised that this would be a good path forward for the company we had built, and we reached an agreement. I have to say that the transition has been truly remarkable. Nextmune’s support and investments have allowed us to innovate further and expand our offerings in a way that would never have been possible without them. I feel very grateful that something that we started has been able to grow to this size and become part of a global network.
What is your current role in the company?
I have been able to shift my focus even more towards the aspects of the job I love best: giving lectures; conducting courses; and ensuring the scientific accuracy of our materials. I lead a dermatology team that provides support to veterinarians across Scandinavia, offering consultations and advice on managing allergic pets.
And looking back at your career, spanning from working as a vet to running a large business and becoming part of a global team, what has been the most surprising aspect?
The transition from a small veterinary clinic to a significant player in veterinary dermatology has been incredible. The collaborations with all employees, colleagues worldwide and major companies, as well as the development of specialised products have been particularly rewarding. Navigating regulatory requirements and building a team of specialists have been challenging but immensely fulfilling.
The journey has been full of challenges, but it has been worth it. Nextmune and Vimian’s support has enabled us to achieve things we never thought possible, including developing new allergy diagnostics and treatments. The future looks promising, and I am excited about the innovations and advancements we will bring to veterinary dermatology and the many possibilities for “cross pollination” with the other Vimian companies.
